Altair design books

thematerialgirl — Mon, 03/01/2010 - 21:57

Spoonflower have a competition on at the moment to design a piece of fabric for a childrens clothes/toys company. All the entries are wonderful - I am in awe of everyone who designs fabric - but one in particular caught my eye. Its by somebody whose online name is mytinystar - www.spoonflower.com/profiles/mytinystar

Spoonflower fabric

This takes me right back to being a kid and colouring in Altair design books.  They were books full of overlapping geometric designs which, now that I look at them, look very much based on Moorish and Islamic mosaic designs. I would spend hours getting the patterns just right. I haven't thought of them for years but now I've looked htem up I see you can still get them via the usual book outlets so I'm tempted to get one.

I also like the little bluebirds which remind me of home (I'm from Cardiff orginally - for those of you not from those shores its a reference to the local football team's nickname rather than the fauna unfortunately!). I used to work in a corner shop / newsagents and loads of men had little bluebirds tattooed onto their hands - although somebody later told me that sailors got bluebird tattoes when they passed through the equator for the first time. Cardiff is a big port so that's pretty likely too.

If you haven't discovered Spoonflower yet - go there now! www.spoonflower.com.   It allows you to upload digital images and designs and have them printed on fabric - cotton, sateen, jersey. You can also buy other people's design - and there are some wonderfully talented people out there.

So. now that you know I'm Welsh - I'd best wish you all a Happy St Davids Day!
